“Fully optioned,” “M Performance” and “stock” are shortcuts that can conceal different histories. When reading an F87 M2 listing, separate how the car was originally specified from what is fitted today. A BMW-branded accessory may be genuine without having been installed when the car was built. An aftermarket component may be clearly documented without being factory equipment.
The goal is a usable equipment record. It should let an inspector check the current configuration and let you choose comparison cars without paying for the same feature twice.
Original specification: Equipment supported by the car’s original window sticker or a reliable vehicle-specific build record. Preserve the model year and delivery market. Do not infer a package solely from a feature that could have been added later.
BMW accessories or retrofits: Genuine parts fitted outside the original specification. Record the part, invoice, installer and installation date where available. “Genuine BMW” identifies a parts claim; it does not by itself establish installation timing.
Aftermarket changes: Components or software from another supplier. Keep the seller’s description separate from invoices or a workshop’s verification. Brand names alone do not establish compatibility or condition.
Unverified: Items visible in photographs or claimed in the description whose identity or origin is not supported. An honest blank is more useful than an invented option code.
BMW’s period M Performance parts document describes carbon-fiber exterior pieces, an exhaust system, adjustable suspension and brake accessories for the original M2. The catalogue establishes that such products existed. It does not certify an individual auction car’s build, installation or current condition.
The 2020 M2 Competition in BaT lot 271905 makes several different claims in one description. It identifies the Executive Package as factory specification, BMW M Performance adjustable coilovers as fitted equipment, and an Active Autowerke exhaust, Dinan intake and intercooler, Apex wheels, and engine and transmission tunes as modifications. This article uses the equipment description checked November 6, 2026. The example concerns specification evidence, not a measured modification premium.
For your worksheet, place the Executive Package in “claimed original specification” until its vehicle-specific documentation is checked. Put the coilovers in the BMW-accessory category with installation timing still to verify. List the non-BMW components and software separately. Do not reduce all of that to either “factory” or “modified” and discard the detail.
This distinction matters even when two cars carry the same badge and transmission. For variant selection, use our M2, Competition and CS guide. The equipment worksheet answers a different question: what is actually included with this particular car?
For every item relevant to your decision, record these six fields:
A photo of an accessory and an invoice for a different part should not silently become one verified item. Have the inspector reconcile the part numbers and current installation. For software, ask what is installed now, who supplied it, whether records exist and whether any earlier changes remain uncertain. Do not equate “returned to stock” with proof of the complete prior configuration.
Ask for a list and photographs of removed components that accompany the car. Establish whether they are complete, identifiable and available at collection. If returning the car to a preferred configuration matters to you, obtain an appropriate workshop quote rather than assuming the supplied parts make that work free.
For example, a hypothetical listing could advertise a suspension kit, original dampers in boxes and an installation invoice. Those are three pieces of information about one change. They are not three independent premiums to add to the bid. The invoice records expenditure; the loose parts record what may be included; the inspection addresses what is installed and its condition.
Compare cars that meet your intended use, then explain the remaining differences in words before assigning any personal allowance. This guide supplies no measured option premiums or universal modification discounts. A documented accessory can make a car more suitable for you without proving that every other buyer will pay more for it.
