Start an E46 M3 comparison with the body style you actually want to own. A convertible can be an alternative to a coupe, but its auction result is not automatically a direct comparable. Mixing both into one average can conceal differences in transmission history, mileage, condition and documentation before you have even considered the roof.
This guide gives you a way to sort candidate listings into a core comparison, useful alternatives and unresolved examples. It does not assign a universal coupe premium or convertible discount.
BMW’s E46 M3 profile describes the coupe and subsequent convertible, along with the manual and SMG transmission choices. These are separate configuration fields. A search for “E46 M3 manual” is still too broad if it combines coupes, convertibles and converted cars.
Write one sentence describing your target: for example, “An E46 M3 convertible with documented factory-manual specification, suitable for regular road use.” That is a hypothetical buying brief, not a market category with a known price. Add the market, mileage range, acceptable modifications and condition requirements you are prepared to defend.
Keep three lists:
BMW’s 2002 US M3 press documentation describes a powered, lined softtop and a variable roof-storage compartment in the convertible. A closed-roof photograph cannot demonstrate the operation or condition of that assembly.
Ask the seller for a recent demonstration of a complete opening and closing cycle, photographs of the fabric and lining, and records of any roof work. Request clear information about water entry, warning indications, interrupted operation or other known problems. Have an independent specialist choose the appropriate tests and explain any limits of the inspection. These are questions to investigate, not diagnoses from photographs.
If a removable hardtop is included, record it as a separate included item. Ask to see its condition, fittings and associated accessories. Do not assume it makes the underlying softtop sound, or assign a fixed amount to it without relevant evidence. For a coupe, separately establish whether a sunroof is fitted and what its condition and operation are.
Both body styles still need a whole-car assessment. Redish Motorsport’s E46 M3 inspection description includes mechanical systems, bodywork, corrosion and electrical checks. Our rear floor evidence guide covers that structural question in more detail. Roof evidence does not replace it.
Bring a Trailer’s 2004 convertible, lot 64,942, is an SMG example with seller discussion of its service history. Its 2004 coupe, lot 239,029, is described as a six-speed manual with approximately 6,000 miles. The auctions also occurred years apart.
These are useful examples of fields to inspect, not a matched pair for calculating a body-style premium. Comparing their headline results would mix body style, transmission, mileage, condition and sale timing. Read the complete descriptions, photographs and comments rather than relying on the model year in the headline. No listing photos or price dataset are reproduced here.
Imagine you are researching a factory-manual convertible. Candidate A is another documented factory-manual convertible with similar use and an adequately documented completed sale. Candidate B is a very low-mileage manual coupe. Candidate C is a convertible converted from SMG, with detailed conversion records.
A belongs in the core comparison, subject to a closer condition review. B belongs among alternatives or context because body style and use differ. C belongs in a separate conversion group, even though it now has three pedals. This sorting is original editorial guidance; the hypothetical cars do not represent observed sales.
For each shortlisted auction, save the source URL, sale date, explicit sold or unsold status, currency, body style, original and current transmission, mileage unit, modifications and unresolved condition questions. Keep an unsold high bid separate from a completed sale. If too few close matches remain, acknowledge the thin evidence instead of making the categories broader without explanation.
Use the comparison to understand your alternatives, then build a separate personal budget for the actual vehicle. Seek a vehicle-specific inspection and quote for work you expect to undertake. A previous owner’s repair bill is not a guaranteed value increase, and another car’s repair cost is not your quote.
Read the E46 transmission-history checklist before labeling a car factory manual. The M3 generation guide provides broader context. BidBud’s buyer workflow supports auction research and budget planning; BidBud does not inspect cars or place bids.
